What's your money personality?
Take the 2-minute quiz
By Nicola Beswick, Founder & Certified Financial Planner®
Two people can earn the exact same income and live completely different money lives.
One is stressed and saving every cent. The other is enjoying life but never quite getting ahead.
Same money. Totally different behaviour.
The difference is rarely about willpower, or how good you are with numbers. It's about wiring. And that wiring has a name: your money personality.
What is a money personality?
Your money personality is the pattern behind how you spend, save and make decisions with money.
It's shaped by how you grew up, what you've been through, and what money means to you deep down.
Once you know yours, so much stops feeling like a personal failing and starts making sense. You stop fighting yourself and start working with how you're wired.
Take the quiz: find your money personality
This quiz takes about two minutes, will uncover your money personality and give you tools and tips on how to work with your money wiring.
The four money personalities
The Spender
You’re generous, fun to be around, and you believe life is for living. You book the trip. You value enjoyment and generosity.
You actually enjoy your money.
Impulse buys, the guilt that follows, and savings that are a bit hit and miss.
- A guilt-free “fun money” account with a weekly cap, so you can spend without the guilt
- A 24-hour pause on big purchases
- An automatic transfer to savings on payday, before the money’s there to spend
The Saver
Saving isn’t a chore for you. It’s a reflex. Whatever comes in, your first thought is how much you can keep.
You’re consistent, future-focused, and you build safety nets without being told to.
Saving can tip into anxiety. Joy gets postponed, spending brings guilt, and there’s that “never enough” feeling. “I’ll relax later,” and later never comes.
- A planned “permission to spend” amount. Money you’re allowed to enjoy, no guilt attached
- Savings goals with a finish line, so saving isn’t a treadmill that never stops
- Swap “how do I save more?” for “what am I saving for?”
The Avoider
Money feels overwhelming, so your instinct is to avoid dealing with it.
You don’t let money run your life. While others tie themselves in knots over every dollar, you keep it in its box and give your headspace to the things that matter more.
The pile you’re not looking at keeps growing. Late fees, missed opportunities, and a low hum of dread in the background.
- Simplify. Fewer accounts means less to think about
- Automate your bills so nothing slips through the cracks
- One short “money admin” slot a month. Fifteen minutes, a checklist of three to five items, the same one every time. Nothing more
The Controller
You like to be on top of your money. The budget’s built, the spreadsheet’s colour-coded, and you know exactly what’s where.
You’re organised, proactive and a great planner. You’re the one who’s ready when life sends a bill. Nothing catches you off guard.
That firm grip can turn rigid. When life refuses to follow the plan, and it will, it throws you more than it should. The stress isn’t the money. It’s the plan being broken.
- Build buffers in, so a surprise is already accounted for
- Add a “flex” category. Money with no rules, on purpose
- Plan for the imperfect months, because there will always be some
| Type | Wants | Superpower | Blind spot | Best tool |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Freedom and choice | Enjoys life, generous | Impulse buys, patchy saving | Payday savings transfer | |
| Security and stability | Consistent, builds safety nets | Postponing joy, “never enough” | Permission-to-spend amount | |
| Peace and comfort | Money doesn’t rule their life | Late fees, background dread | Automate bills, monthly check-in | |
| Order and clarity | Organised, great planner | Rigidity when plans change | Buffers and a “flex” category |
A quick word on your partner's money personality
If you share your life with someone, you share money decisions too. And the two of you are probably not the same type.
A Saver and a Spender can look at the same $500 and see two entirely different things. Neither is wrong. They're just wired differently.
So ask your partner to take the quiz too, then compare notes over a cuppa. Knowing each other's type turns "why do you always do that" into "ah, that's your Saver talking." It's a much kinder place to start a money chat.
Melbourne financial advice built around the way you tick
Knowing your money personality is step one. Building a financial plan that fits you is where the real progress happens.
This matters most at life's big turning points. When retirement is on the horizon. When a relationship ends. When an inheritance or payout lands and the decisions feel heavy.
Under pressure, we all lean harder on our defaults. Spenders spend. Savers freeze. Avoiders avoid. Controllers grip tighter.
A good plan allows for that. It doesn't ask you to become a different person. It gives the person you already are a clear path.
That's how we work at White Rabbit Advisory. No judgement. No one-size-fits-all budget. We take the time to understand you first, then we chart your wealth around the way you tick.
Whether you're getting ready for retirement, rebuilding after divorce or separation, or working out what to do with an inheritance, you don't have to figure this out on your own.

FAQs
-
A money personality is your default pattern of thinking, feeling and behaving with money. It shows up in what you do on autopilot, like when extra cash arrives or a bill is due. Most frameworks describe a handful of types. At White Rabbit Advisory we use four: Spender, Saver, Avoider and Controller. Each one has real strengths and a blind spot.ion text goes here

The four money personality types are the Spender, who wants freedom and choice, the Saver, who wants security and stability, the Avoider, who wants peace and comfort, and the Controller, who wants order and clarity. No type is better than another. Each is good at something the others find hard, and each has a habit worth keeping an eye on.

The quickest way is a short quiz. Ours has ten questions and takes about two minutes. Answer for an average month, not your best or worst, and go with your first instinct. Whichever letter you choose most is your type. You can take it online in this article or download the printable version. text goes here

Yes, plenty of people are a blend of two types. You might be a Saver with your everyday money and an Avoider when it comes to super or investments. If your quiz result is a tie, read both profiles. Usually one describes your everyday habits, and the other shows up when you're under stress.
-
Yes, your money personality can shift, though your core wiring tends to stick around. Big life events like retirement, divorce, illness or an inheritance often move people. A lifelong Saver might loosen up once their future feels secure. The aim isn't to change your type. It's to keep the strengths and put simple tools around the blind spot.
-
It's very common, and it can be a real strength. A Spender helps a Saver enjoy life, and a Saver helps a Spender build security. The trouble starts when neither understands the other. Take the quiz separately, swap results, and agree on a few shared rules, like a spending amount you each control with no questions asked.
-
No single money personality is best for building wealth. Savers and Controllers may find saving easier, but they can hold too much in cash or struggle to enjoy what they've built. Spenders and Avoiders can do very well once the right things are automated. What makes the difference is a plan designed around your wiring.
